Insomnia is the inability to sleep, which leads to daytime fatigue and impaired functioning. There are two types of insomnia, one is called Type 1 and the other type is called Type 2. The two types of insomnia are defined by the timing of the patient’s sleep onset (time when they fall asleep) and how long it takes them to fall asleep. A person with Type 1 insomnia will have trouble falling asleep at night, but will eventually fall asleep after about an hour or two of trying. A person with type 2 insomnia will be able to fall asleep quickly but will wake up early in the morning (within about 5 hours).

Although insomnia is a common sleeping disorder, it can be treated in many different ways.
